Off with the old

So, to coincide with the design of our new site we've changed from TypePad to WordPress. Why am I telling you this you may well ask?

I may well answer that it's because this is the last post that will show up in your RSS reader, for the new posts, redirect your feed reader here:

See you soon...!

New and improved!

Well, technically just new. I actually hate that term, seriously, are you new or improved? Make a decision buddy, nobody likes a fence-sitter.

Anyhoo...

We have a whole new site that we dig loads, lovingly designed by Coda (this guy's like the A-Team, way awesome, but in such high demand he's hard to hire). We also just launched PresoRockGods, produced by Thunk!, it's purpose is basically to help you suck less. We're nice like that.

In fact, we're just nice in general, that's why you want to hire us. Right now. For a big budget... just read the words slowly... hire us... breathe... hire us... you're getting sleepy...!

Northriding really is the centre of the world

Yet again we're spreading our wings, this time to a top secret client in San Francisco (via NY). I tried to convince them that the project would be better if we met face to face - at their place. I even had my passport charged and ready. They said that email would suffice.

Bloody email...!

Yes, you're right - we do rock.

So much so that we just won our biggest, and second biggest jobs ever.

Two conferences.

Two countries.

One presentation team.

I wrote that myself. I am legend.

Hire us.

Help wanted, apply within.

So, you know how to video edit, and you've got a super-duper attitude? Well, Missing Link is looking for you! Well, maybe for you: there are a few other things we need as well.

Firstly, we need you to be good at it. Just being able to push buttons doesn't make you an editor. You need to be able to take content, and tell a story with it. On top of that, it needs to look excrementally hot.

Secondly, you need to be able to do it all yourself. We've got guys who can make some extras, but the majority of the work - from capturing, to cutting, to sexy, to finished - is up to you.

We're a family here. We work together (a lot - hope you're not fond of sleeping), we muck about together, we learn together and, more often than not, we're responsible for making each other bleed a little. So, if you can, and want to be a part of this carnival, and do all the things I mentioned above (it wasn't for my health), roll up.

Please note: Tattoos and piercing aren't mandatory, but they are awesome. Cry-babies need not apply.

The end is nigh...

...Not for the company, but for this iteration of the website, sorry it's been far too long and updates have been few and far between, expect a change soon.

It's been a great year with Sam running things, and hopefully the new site will reflect the new freshness she's injecting into the company as MD, she really is bringin' sexy back. Me, I'm off for a surf...!

Missing Ink?

Not satisfied with tattooing our staff for free, we've decided to extend that courtesy to our clients and friends too. So we're flying top tattooist and rock star, Marcus van der Tuin, up from Metal Machine in Cape Town for two weeks so you can get inked on us. Crazy? You'd think, until you see how many of our clients (mostly bankers) have booked a slot already. You're welcome to join 'em too.

Now there's a presentation you'll never forget...!

High noon at Missing Link

Just a quick thank you to everyone for all the kind messages and support we've been given following the armed robbery at the office the other day.

For those of you that don't know, three armed gunmen entered the company at 10am the Thursday before last and had us all lie flat on the floor. They got away with R350k of our laptops, and a lot of cellphones and ipods too. Other than pistol-whipping Graham a bit, no one was hurt, and Graham's big and strong (well tall and thin, but you get where I'm going here).

Luckily due to us working primarily from back-up drives, we only lost around 5% of our current work - BTW. if that was you - sorry.

Here's hoping that they get caught, and wrongfully tried for something that doesn't go down well in prison...!

End of an era

First it was the skate park theme, then the coffee shop... well as from next year we'll have a whole new look.

Office

I'm really hoping it doesn't suck, but if it's half as much fun as destroying the last one was (and it was, watch the video here), then we may be onto something.

You're all welcome to visit when we're done, especially the hot chick from gym...!

The world is our oyster (pity I hate oysters though)

So, along with our usual okies (don't be lazy, read below), at the moment we have clients in New York, San Francisco, and Switzerland. With any luck, we may extend that list to Egypt in a week (shit, I just jinxed that, didn't I?).

Watch out Macdonald's I think I may have developed a taste for this globalisation lark.

Now, if only I could teach young Asian children to edit...!

Update: Turns out I didn't jinx it after all - Cairo's in, hell yeah...!

Roses are red...

Violets are blue...
And we've been too busy...
to waste our time on daft poems, use your bloody imagination people.

I blame our clients really. If it wasn't for the likes of Investec, Unisa, Mweb, Medscheme, Liberty Life, Supergroup, Media 24 and a herd of others, who've been working us to the bone this month, we'd have plenty time to spare for this kinda stuff.

Luckily for us though, they don't like our crap poetry either, so have been frantically keeping us busy with our day job - making ass-kicking presentations.

Which, thankfully for us, and audiences everywhere, is not their day job...!

Every Coke needs a Pepsi

Hey, competition is good, and yup, we have some. That would be fine if they weren't so damned good. They're called Duarte Design, and their offices are well worth a visit. So that's what we did.

Luckily for us, they're based in Mountainview, CA, but even continents apart, we had a lot to talk about.

So much so that we're swapping staff, some anyway - for a few weeks. This way, everybody wins. It amazes me why more people don't do this more often. Here's a challange: find your biggest competitor, see what you can learn, and see what you can teach. Everybody wins.

Quid Pro Quo, Clarice.

Just for the record though, we're Coke people...!

All that and nice guys too

I tend to be a wee bit slack when it comes to updating our charity page, but we do try and donate R50k of product monthly. Thursday night though, we did something a little different. We bought out a movie that NuMetro had sponsored to raise money for Yenzani (we've made 'em two vids in the past).

Yenzani

We also auctioned an MLTV style video to our clients that Liberty Medical Scheme won for R25k, Conrad Koch came to the party too by donating a show, there was R1k in cash donations, and finally, we added another R8k on the top.

That's around R50k in cash, good times...!

Late nights

As a rule, we try and avoid late nights when we can, working late is admrable, but avoidable... usually. The last few weeks have been crazy busy, and we've failed on that count.

There's been roadshows for Liberty Life, Standard Bank, and FNB. Events for Nokia, and Mercury. As well as tenders, pitches, presos and videos for RMB, Axiz, Medscheme, Motecasino, Toys R Us and Mogale City... and that was just in the last few weeks.

They say that there's no sleep for the wicked.

Man alive, how wicked are we?

When I was younger...

I thought that success was all about how much you made. I would gauge Missing Link's success based on factors such as cash flow and turnover. I'm sitting here now though, at 18h10 watching the guys chilling playing TV games on our office Wii, and I realise that that is actually what it's about.

It's about creating an environment that's better than rush hour - if your team would rather leave the office at 17h00 on the dot to sit in rush hour traffic, you've failed. Oh, and it's probably not your team that needs fixing...!

Don said a naughty word

This week Don organised kindergarten week at the Link. It's been fun, we got to make our own cookies. Don mailed us all to let us know the results, I apologise, Don's a very naughty boy.

Congratulations to Wolfy (no.14) who won the cookie competition. For those of you that weren't here, Wolf won himself an awesome watch-walky-talky set. I've been told it doesn't work tho. Well done for breaking it already Wolfy, in true pre-school style. What a champ!

Second place was no. 10
Tied third place no. 2 and no. 13

Well done kiddies! Teacher is so proud, and remember, you're ALL winners, except the kids who got no votes, try fuckin' harder next time.

Teacher loves you!

For more news on us that has absolutely nothing to do with the job you're about to hire us for (and yes, you are), be sure to check out MLTV...!

But enough about them.

Lets face it, if you wanted to read about our impressive clients (and yeah, they really are impressive) you would have visited their pages.

However, you're here, so you obviously want to know about us; and quite frankly between you and me, I can't really blame you - we're fabulous. Anyway, enough teasing, here, read this rocking piece that the Cape Times did on us yesterday (click the image, silly):

Oh, there's a game in the article too, it's called count all the missing quotation marks.

It's a Cape Town thing..!

The took everything but the kitchen sink

Investec Story-1We just completed a great fun gig for Investec. The gig included strategy, video, preso work, me blabbing a bit about stories, D'ave facilitating workshops, Tony working through the night...again...twice (sleep dude), and Lee kicking out her first real-time synopsis.

The client seemed stoked too.

Bit that makes me most proud: Two days, not one graph.

Damn, but we're good

Well we must be when you look at the work we've kicked out this year, it's just crazy (for clients like Nissan, Standard Bank, Absa, FNB, RMB, Medscheme and Liberty Medical Scheme).

This post is about the team though. Nothing has been too much trouble for the guys, despite the long hours and weekends, everyone's smiling, if not laughing. It makes such a difference when you walk through the door to a team like that.

Too much respect...!

For fans of the rabbit in the headlamps look

Jan2006People always moan that we don't update the news section enough. Well, if you're hungry for content, be sure to pick up this month's (January) issue of Entrepreneur. Juliet Koeman did an ass-kicking snapshot on us on page 28 (sure she's good, but consider the raw materials she was working with, eh?). Sadly I look a bit daft on the picture - thus the post's title.

Ah well, I guess I'll have to wait another year for Cosmo's most un-eligable, non-bachelor feature...!

The first of many updates (promise)

Hell yeah, we're back, and we're better (granted it's taken us a week to get over that post-holiday brain-fart, but hey, we're only just super-human).

It's one of our more exciting starts to a year, back-to-back meetings, which promise a heap of new jobs (and clients). We've also launched Missing Link 021, our CT office, under the very capable control of Heinrich Hattingh (yeah, he's Afrikaans). The offices are still getting the finishing touches, but we're A-for-away, so if you're in CT, stop reading and hire us already.

Oh and I'm building a new house, it's expensive stuff, so don't hold back people, bring on those power budgets...!

So, who are we and what do we do?

I was recently asked to supply a client with a company profile. After nearly 10-years in business you'd think we'd have one. You really would.

We do now. Here it is:

Stand out and deliver!

I was super-stoked to be interviewed by Shauntelle Hamlett from Stand Out and Deliver (ain't that the best company name ever?). On re-reading the interview I think I may have been a bit (a lot) wordy, and yeah, a few too many commas slipped in, but if you're interested in how we think, go give it a read.

Oh, and be sure to bookmark her page or get her feed, Shauntelle's going to be interviewing a lot of really cool business owners.

I'm thinking she saved the best for first though...!

A wee change

For too long now this news section has simply been a list of the jobs we've been working on, I'm guessing that that's getting a bit tired for y'all ( I know it's getting tired for me, thus the lack of updates). So I'm going to try and add a bit more about the company and the people. I'll still feature the jobs as I'm really proud of the stuff we do and the range of people we do it for.

Feedback as always is welcome...!

A great idea from Tom Peters

From biz-community:

'All you need to know... more or less' was the title of uber-management guru Tom Peters' business leadership presentation to the Global Leaders Africa Summit in Johannesburg this week. Peters believes you need to employ more weird people to deal with a crazy world.

Well get out those cheque books people, here we are...!

More from March

As well as the work mentioned in the last few posts, we were also busy with a lot of other stuff. Lists are boring, but in this case it's a bit like whipping it out:

JSE/Moneyweb: Make a million awards
Absa insurance brokers: Roadshow presentation
Liberty Life: Post-launch activation
Dimension Data: Services marketing gig
Xstrata: Corporate video
Investec Private Bank: Brand video presentation
Standard Bank: Buyers guide launch video
Standard Bank: Credit conference
First National Bank: Extreme service makeover event
Stanlib: Banbonani video
All Pay: Corporate video
The Gate: Pitch preso
Medscheme /Magna Carta: A herd of videos
Altrisk: Guest speaker at launch

Man alive, we're seriously well hung eh?

Nosey competitors, I hope you're jealous...!

Speaking of roadshows

We also just wrapped up a nationwide roadshow for Liberty Life where we helped launch their new logo and ad campaign, as well as some great products and most importantly, their new 'it's all about the customer' drive.

This was real all-hands-on-deck job, with just about all the links chipping in at some stage. Nice one guys.

I liked this job a lot as we took quite an experimental route with the presentation, opting to have a customer present (the brilliant Riaad Moosa) using the Lessig Method (awesome), instead of the usual Liberty Life staff.

It worked very well, amazing what happens when you give your customers the mic...!

How did we help them?

Yesterday was the last gig of an 11-stop roadshow we put together for First National Bank. We created all the video and presentation components, and our Melissa ran each of the shows with the MGG guys.

I also had the privilege of being the guest speaker, giving a talk on cross-selling. People laughed a lot, I really am a witty chap. Lets hope the message sticks too.

Oh bloody hell, who am I kidding with this false modesty? With my talent, looks, charm and intellect, of course the message stuck.

Now, if only I could find hats that fit...!

Rock stars

As well as creating synopsis videos for each of the Coca-Cola Colab Live On Tour shows this month, we were asked to create an opening AV for the Massive Mix concert. Sure, this isn't our regular gig but we love Octagon and Coca-Cola so how could we possibly say no?

Ccmasmix

Besides, we got to put ourselves in it, so in our own little way we shared the stage with Metallica.

Good times...!

Journalist, I'm not

Yeah, sorry, you'd think with the good stuff we're making I'd spend more time bragging about it here.

Rest assured though, this news area is lacking because our client's presos aren't. We're working our little asses off (seriously, you should feel mine, it's rather firm) at the Link these days.

Oh, but we wouldn't have it any other way...!

February 05, 2006

Is it February already?

Rats, looking at the site you'd think we just took January off. You'd be wrong of course, but you could think it. We completed two road shows for Standard Bank, a video for Absa's new student lifestyle centre, two videos for Nissan, a video for Xstrata, a video for Investec, a few videos and a presentation for Dimension Data, a video for Acer and Eventworx, videos for FNB, Liberty Life and Coca-Cola (ta Octagon), a video for Re/Max, and a bunch of videos and a preso for Ekurhuleni housing dept.

We sumo wrestled, we enjoyed some archery, we redesigned parts of the office (we now have a beach), and we bought a bike, and a buck.

With any luck February wont be quite so quiet...!

Life's wee pleasures

Last year i was hired to speak at the New Holland Publishers conference, this year they yet again wanted some Missing Link presence so we sent them a few of the lads.

Marc and Carbon Carlos headed off with the team to Arniston to make some on-the-spot fun vids that were ran that night. The gig rocked, but the lads were most blown away by the business class upgrades, and bubbly baths.

It's the little things in life...!

Standard Bank Marketing Conference

For the third year in a row, we helped the nice folk at Standard Bank with their annual marketing conference. Keeping with tradition (and due to the nature of the event), we had just 8-days to bring it all together.

The lads created 40 videos and 5 presentations in this time.

Slackers...!

More video work

Last week we worked with Troika to develop a video for Dimension Data, Internet Solutions, and Plessy, that was run at the GSM Africa conference.

Troika developed a kick-ass script, we helped bring it to life with a fair amount of split screen work, music, and animation. Thanks to Quarterpipe Don for his help here.

Couldn't have done it without you bro...!

Nefco

Over the last two weeks we got to work with the lads from Nefco on a video based presentation to another of our clients, Standard Bank.

This vid had a different feel to our usual stuff, heavier, more serious - quite in your face really.

I liked it a lot, seems they did too...!

Colab: Live on tour

As a presentation company, we occasionally get some nice derivative projects, so after helping Octagon launch Coca-Cola's Colab: live on tour event at their bottlers conference, we were asked to help with the pre-show press event and the gig itself.

Colablot

Graham, Charlie, Marc, Mo and Wolfie put many in many hours, and many sleepless nights on this one, developing presentations, videos, and on-stage visual effects. Our objective on the quote for the job actually stated "to make this the best work we've ever created".

We did it too...!

November 12, 2005

A busy two weeks

Two weeks ago we worked with Business Connexion on a pretty huge tender presentation. We think it came out looking rad, our fingers are crossed guys.

That week we also assisted Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality in developing a presentation and two videos for their annual gala dinner. Donovan came up with a killer idea for the finale video, it worked really well too.

At the same time, we helped Dimension Data and Internet Solutions with their annual sales-kick-off. We needed to create nearly 20 videos and presentation material for this in under a week, much respect to Chris, Carl, and Ben for this one. They were pretty damn stoked.

Last week Marc completed work on a presentation and video for Standard Bank's group schemes offering. It was an easy preso because the product's so good (hey, we're not blowing smoke up our client's ass when we say this, we actually asked them to implement it at the Link).

Melissa and Heinrich also helped Standard Bank launch the Picasso and Africa exhibition that's coming to SA, feedback on that was cool.

Charles then kicked out a beut of a video for the Re/Max job we're doing with Magna Carta Cape Town.

All this and we still managed time for 2 braais, dress-up and horror movies on halloween, and a half day off for lunch and to vist the LG XPO extreme show.

My guys so rock...!

Absa kept us busy this week with a presentation and some videos for their vehicle and asset finance roadshow. Our client Bhavni rocked, not sure if she loved the Segway though.

Much respect...!

Chalk it up to raw talent

If you've visited offices more than once, you would notice that the main blackboard changes monthly based on a theme that we've got going at that time.

Synopsis heaven

This week we completed two synopsis videos in which we basically try and capture the essence of someone's gig in a short punchy vid.

The first was an FNB video for Eventworx, the second was Adcock Ingram's PRIDE event.

As I type this we're busy shooting a third one for Standard Bank's grad weekend.

Shit, I know what you're thinking, we must be very good.

You are of course correct, we really are...!
