The proper rules for the "hand" game

Posted by ../Ant

Just so that we are all clear on the rules of this game, go have a look at this page. It looks like you are supposed to play by making an "ok" sign with your hand and not that way we've been doing it all these years by touching the tips of all your fingers together.

iPhone YouTube issues

Posted by Don

This article explains it all, but basically:

YouTube have specially formatted some, okay not some, a shitload of videos uploaded to their site, to be compatible with the iPhone. Only thing is, some of them are illegal. Eek!

The 11th Hour

Posted by Rich...!

Leonardo DiCaprio is creating what looks like a kick-ass documentary film on the environmental crisis. It's called 11th Hour, there's a special intro to the trailer on his myspace page:

My fav line:

"It's not just the 11th hour, it's 23h59"...!

I'm so hardcore

Posted by Don

I'm the only person I know to be booted off Facebook!

Yes, the everyone's-friends-we-love-you-all Facebook.

So here's the story: My brother started a 'Packett' group (our last name), and seeing as there are VERY few of us here in good old South Africa, I started sending messages to some other Packett's I found on Facebook, not realising, however, that that constitutes spam, and they booted me.

I pleaded my case, and am awaiting their response. Haha.

A survey...

Posted by Rich...!

World1-1Just got this gem via email:

A worldwide survey was conducted by the UN. The only question
asked was: "Would you please give your honest opinion about solutions to the
food shortage in the rest of the world?"

The survey was a huge failure...

In Africa they didn't know what "food" meant.
In Eastern Europe they didn't know what "honest" meant.
In Western Europe they didn't know what "shortage" meant.
In China they didn't know what "opinion" meant.
In the Middle East they didn't know what "solution" meant.
In South America they didn't know what "please" meant.
And in the USA they didn't know what "the rest of the world" meant.

Would be funnier if it wasn't so true...!

A lesson in how not to conduct an interview

Posted by Rich...!

There's nothing I hate more than a talk show host that uses their medium as a pulpit (pun partially intended) as opposed to a place the public can watch some healthy discussion/debate (via).

This fool never really gives Dawkins a chance to answer (although I can understand why, better men have tried, and failed). I particularly like O' Rielly's closing line, "Thanks for coming in here."

Not sure why you bothered mate, you were doing all the talking yourself...!

Crack-a-what?

Posted by Don

A while ago I posted an article on our sister blog, Jo'blog, about a cleaning product that I thought was particularly useful. The post's heading 'Free advertising' worked wonders on google.co.za, but it's been drawing the wrong kind of people, non-bloggers (obviously) who think it's a free platform to display their stuff. Selling cars, internet services, special event planning, buying stocks and most recently, Crack-a-caps.

Bizarre. I love the bit about the 'trendy frayed patch'. Genius! Haha!

Quite possibly the worst phone, ever...

Posted by Rich...!

I buy a fair amount of phones every year, generally of the smart variety. This bad boy is the worst I've had in ages. Ladies and gentlemen, allow me to present, the SonyEricsson M600i:

M600I Twin

Crap interface, non-tactile on-screen s/end buttons (one of the many reasons I'm in no rush for this). Idiotic phonebook search, unimpressive battery life, and badly placed function buttons i.e. you're always pushing one when you should be pushing the other.

Sure, James Bond's latest lady friend used it, but she was a back-stabbing bitch, and now she's dead

Pity she didn't take the phone with her...!

Will 3D printing be a crime?

Posted by ../Ant

3Dprint-2

Imagine having a 3D printer. Need a larger coffee mug, print it. Need a chair? Print the parts and assemble. There are millions of everyday (and not so everyday) objects that you could just print out if you needed it. What if it had a copper/metal cartridge, you could print out circuits. Start printing electronic devices? Fuck...

Anyway I was wondering then, what if someone created an iPod in the software and made it available to download via bittorrent? Then millions of users would be download object files and printing there own accessories etc. I hope it happens soon... :)

Well here's the start of it...

And if you like the idea of that, then listen to this... (It's called "Printcrime" by Cory Doctorow)

A wee news flash for all you corporate Santa Claus types...

Posted by Rich...!

If it has your logo on it, it's not a gift - it's advertising!

Giftish

Every x-mas we get send a shit-tonne of "gifts". From calendars and mouse pads, to beach towels and bottle openers. Every single one of them comes with the company logo that gave us the gift engraved, printed or silkscreened on to it. I've never understood this.

If you truly want to give someone a gift, why brand it? Just give it to them - no strings attached. For it to be a gift it needs to be selfless, and that means no logo (the exception to the rule is when you're a consumer brand - a client at Nike recently gave me a pair of design-em-yourself-trainers, that's obviously a different story - and it rocked).

Imagine all the x-mas presents you get from your family and friends this year has their face or name on it. Crazy, no?

Here's the marketing clincher though. If you don't brand it people are more likely to use it (fact), and if the gift is cool, relevant, and memorable they'll never forget who gave it to them - and will happily tell people that ask about it, the story behind it.

Not totally selfless then...!

PS. This doesn't just apply to x-mas, but all corporate gifts.

It started out as just a 4gb flash drive

Posted by Rich...!

A few weeks ago I read on cherryflava (highly recommended feed) about Mimoco's new limited edition designer flash drives.

I went straight to the site and ordered two of their 4gb models; ghost and robo.

Roboghost

Now if the conversation around the design itself is not free prize enough, although at $170 a pop I'm kinda stretching the whole "free" thing, each drive arrived today with a wad of themed stickers and postcards. Nice touch.

Then, when you insert the drives into your machine, you'll see a .zip that contains videos, icons, wallpapers, and screen savers. Even nicer touch (not to mention great use of the medium).

I love it when guys get the little things right. After all:

There are no little things...!

PS. The Star Wars series kicks ass too

So, Apple wants to spam me...

Posted by Rich...!

I recently downloaded the trial for Aperture. To activate it you need a serial number from Apple.

I went to the site, filled in my data (why is this step even necessary? Just give me 30-day trial like everyone else), unchecked the "send me news" box, and hit submit.

That's where it all went horribly wrong.

Applespammers-1

Apple actually forces you to check the "Keep me up to date with Apple news, software updates and the latest updates on products and services." check box i.e. The "allow us to spam you" one.

Watch this. Read that.

Posted by Rich...!

On Friday night, Andrea, Ben and I went to watch Children of Men, an awesome, if not somewhat disturbing film.

The basic premise is this; 20 years from now the last generation of man exists because all women are infertile, and have been for 18 years.

All but one woman that is.

Clive Owen's job is to protect her and her unborn child.

This reminded me a lot of a graphic novel I bought recently while in Boston with D'ave. It's called Y: The last man (written, drawn). I should mention here that I've never been a comic fan as such, the story just appealed to me so I picked it up.

Ythelastman-1

Basically, every creature with the Y chromosome has died, with the exception of one man, and his pet monkey. These two are left to fend for themselves in a world of women.

It is wicked cool! Seriously, even my wife is hooked. Which brings me to the point of the post. You can now download the first issue from Vertigo (8.8mb pdf).

I strongly suggest you give it a read...!

Turning nouns into verbs

Posted by Rich...!

So I just had an aha moment courtesy of The Seth. It's from his essay, Verbs (Gerunds actually) which I read in his killer book Small is the new big.

Here's an excerpt:

People care much more about verbs than nouns. They care about things that move, that happen, that change. The care about experiences and events and the way things make us feel.

Nouns just sit there, inanimate lumps.

This got me thinking about presentations (what we do). Most people see presentations as nouns, files with data (that can be uploaded to silly sites). Presentations aren't  about the noun though, at least the good ones aren't, the good ones are about the verb i.e presenting. People give give good presentations, they don't make them.

01 Gculture Powerpud

(Cartoon from blaugh. Cheers Rob!)

Rarely if ever have I seen a speaker receive positive feedback for getting the noun right, if they failed at the verb.

This, incidentally, is what Apple didn't understand when they created Keynote as a solution to PowerPoint's problems, but that's another rant altogether.

So, fix the verb first, if you get that right, the noun will just be common sense...!
