Surprise! You're still not getting MTV2!

Fuck thisIn another winning move, Multichoice have decided to add a new music channel to their Dstv bouquet. MTV Base.

" MTV Base will also provide a platform for a variety of African music genres alongside diverse international urban artists including Alicia Keys, Jay-Z, Sean Paul, IAM, Passi and Saian Supa Crew."

Now, as much as I detest RnB music, I know there are folk who dig it. I also. Don't. Care. There are other people in this country who have been fighting, and fightin' hard, to get more alternative music channels in this country for years, but to no avail. Let's be honest, most other contemporary styles are already nicely covered (Soundcheck, Channel O, MTV - same shit, different channel). If you flick over to MTV Europe, pretty much all you get are RnB vids, back to back with the newest/dodgiest Kylie vid, hip hop and whatever else is spewing from Latin America these days. I am sick to death of the latest rubbish pop trend. I am exhausted of these precast lyrical ideas, and 'fashionable' production elements (yes you, Missy). I am tired of all the made-to-order booty videos (believe it or not). And I vomit everytime a new chitzy prince/ss wiggles her way across my screen with minimal clothing, less talent and a song she hasn't even written. Does anyone actually have anything to say worth hearing anymore? Aaarrgrg!

Breathe... must breathe.

Will they ever listen? Will we ever be able to see our 'platform' on the countries only Satellite provider? Do I have to start quoting Slayer lyrics here, people?! In the same way you don't want to see RnB fans in love, or Hip Hop fans with a gun, you do not want to see angry alternative people. And we're already pretty mad (see Slipknot and Rage Against the Machine for references)...

I don't know how eloquently I made my point. Bollocks to you, I have spittle on my keyboard and I'm angry.

I just cannot understand the apparently global obsession with R&B and hip-hop and the bullshit image that it portrays (which a large proportion of people in *this* country seem to accept as real and worth emulating). I suppose it's in much the same way as I couldn't understand the dance music trend that thankfully seems to be dying out (everywhere except on 5fm). And don't get me started on 5fm's playlist. Yes, I enjoy some "commercial" music, hell, under physical torture I may even admit to liking a track or two by Anastacia or someone similar, but doesn't anyone listen to music as a product of artistic self-expression anymore? Music where the lyrics discuss personal or topical issues other than ho's, cars and money? Music where people who love what they're doing actually play realy instruments and perform songs, good or bad, that they composed and wrote themselves? I'd go as far as to say that even an idiot like Eminem was refreshing, since there was actually something to be said in some of his music.

Well, at the end of the day, I did go check out what a 'rockist' was. I am both amused and embarrassed.

Nice. Rock on rockism!

would rather listen to rock than anything else, crap like RnB etc. I HATE DSTV :-(

Posted by: Warren | Oct 29, 2004 9:31:28 PM

Whats the Point of having so many channels for the same music... it's all crap, it's about time we get mtv 2 so we can watch artists who use talent to make music (demon hunter, norma jean, chevelle, the agony scene ect...) instead of some chick shaking her ass all there way on to TRL (have you ever wondered why in pop music the vocalist is all ways hot and half naked, i can tell you why... because she's not there because of her music). Im over listening to the same crap about horny black guys, and white chick in love. I WANT MTV 2.....NOW!!!!

Don't know what MTV2's got, but WE need a fair share of good pure rock music. There's enough hip-hop for CRYING OUT LOUD!!!! For the love of rock, come bring some-Yo mama if i see or hear another hip-hop franchise. There are still rocksters in SA-HELLOOO!!!!!!!!!! Koula and DSTV Audio in Durbs is all we got.
